I am a liberal Democrat who found this blog by accident. I know I am late to the party, but I totally think Romney should make this offer--and would expect that Obama would take him up on it.

The worst thing you're likely to find in Obama's transcript is that he took a graduate seminar in Marxism. The right keeps talking about how the transcripts might show that his grades were poor, despite that fact that he graduated summa cum laude which is based on GPA.

But Romney! Romney's tax returns are likely to show that he invested in illegal tax havens in Switzerland and was offered an amnesty.

I would be far more willing to admit that I took some coursework in college that rightwingers can demagogue than to admit that I commited felonious tax avoidance strategies using offshore bank accounts.

Here's hoping that Romney takes your suggestion to heart.

Red, I don't know if the requirements for getting the foreign student scholarship actually included that the recipient be citizen of a foreign country. Perhaps just some kind of vaguely defined foreign background was required. Do you know what the requirements were? Also it would be possible that Obama had some kind of foreign citizenship through his real or adopted father, if that was an actual requirement. How would that be a game changer? Do you imagine that anyone who would otherwise vote for Obama would change their vote over that? Finally, he may have lied, claiming foreign citizenship that he did not have. He's a politician; he lies for a living. How much difference would a lie so far in the past make to anyone who was going to vote for him anyway?

Romney won't, because at this point, he has the election in the bag, and secondly as I've been pointing out to Birthers for years, no one really wants to know if Obama is a foreigner.

Wow! That almost sounds like movement.

If Obama claimed foreign citizenship in order to gain an admission advantage and financial aid, that would be a game changer.

If Romney really wants to mount an effective challenge, he should simply release his own records and then dare Obama to match him. Saying I'll only do it if you go first just makes it sound like he has something to hide. Probably they both have something to hide. I doubt that either did anything technically illegal, but don't doubt that both gamed the system - Romney the tax code and Obama the equally archane university/affirmative action system. Such activities, Romney's in the more recent and Obama's in the more distant past, would not reflect well on either of them but are of trivial importance compared to current issues. Sort of like the burning question of whether or not GWB snorted coke in college or what his attendance was at air national guard meetings.

Red,

As quaint as it sounds in 2012, a number of universities actually took attendance in the 1980's and earlier. My college transcripts actually have that record included along with grades, class standing, etc.

Regards,
