Thanks for this Cato/Ryan, lots of books I'd not heard of you brought to my attention.

One question... what's the correct last line in the first Francis quotation (then and only then could men their own selves, as individuals or as people, as a republic)?

Great post! Maybe I'll relocate to Lugano.

Still, perhaps, Micklegarth (a/k/a the Great City or Constantinople) is the exception that proves the rule -- it stood for 1100 years and, at its peak, comprised 2/3s of the wealth of the entire civilized world.

The author mentions the downward spiral of a city once it reaches 200,000 in population. Larger cities actually give more of both good and bad, where smaller cities give less. I believe also that in a small township, "One's personal garbage can may be overturned quite rarely by a stray dog, where large cities are more like the large landfill that attracts dogs, coyotes, skunks, opossums, rats, feral cats, and every other unwanted creature that may be able to hide within it's vastness.".............. I am no fan of the "Metropolis" and it's expanded intrusions into the citizens lives....Perhaps the story of the "Tower Of Babel" is a also a story of decentralization?
