I find myself unable to open any of the hotlinks embedded in this post other than those for altright, Vdare, and Slate. Does anyone else have this problem?

Ahem. You left out John Zmirak’s response to Gingrich’s proposal. Zmirak writes:

Ironically, Gingrich is taking hits from other (in most ways, better) candidates such as Michelle Bachmann for policy proposals that really aren’t half-bad. … It shows a truly Catholic awareness of the difference between human rights and political privileges. This moderate, humane proposal might sound familiar to Crisis readers; I made it at this site in May 2011.

For whatever it’s worth, I also support the Gingrich-Zmirak approach. But to keep it in perspective: at this point it’s just debate rhetoric, not policy proposals. The real crisis (to borrow the name of Zmirak’s magazine) is the problem of ongoing mass legal and illegal immigration, not the problem of what to do with the illegals after the flow is stopped. Frankly, I have no idea why Gingrich even raised this proposal at this stage, when he’s competing for Republican primary voters.
