Did Bob Barr Just Endorse Newt Gingrich?
RedPhillips

Posted under Bob Barr & Election 2012 & Libertarian Party & Republican Party

It looks like he did, along with a lot of other pathetic Georgia Republicans. At first there was some skepticism that this was legit, but so far there have been no objections from the Barr camp. Barr was considering a run for Congress as a Republican, but recently announced he wasn’t going to run. But he does seem to be attempting to re-ingratiate himself with the GOP.

On a larger scale, this mass endorsement by elected Republican officials seems to indicate that establishment Republicans are coming to terms with the fact that Gingrich is the last remaining alternative to Romney. Of course there is still Ron Paul, but these types of Republicans are too fearful and/or wishy-washy to endorse a real alternative like Paul.

Update: The “some skepticism” link above was incorrect. It is now fixed.

Romney would be acceptable to mainstream Republicans if he were not associated with a cultist religious movement. The fact that he is from Massachusetts and is associated with Romney-Care could probably be overlooked or explained away, but the first is a tougher sell.

Even Obama was able to deflect his lack of authentic traditional religiosity, first, because he was black, and second, as a member of an ostensibly black Christian church he was deemed to be more or less Christian by enough voters (as bizarre as that might be–however it was mostly because he was black)-and for those who voted for him it probably didn’t matter. Religion matters to many Republicans.

Since the Republican’s Great Black Hope recently self-destructed, it was back to the table for them, and now it seems the mainstream has come up with their own version of Plan 9. Newt in fact could double for a glib Tor Johnson with hair.

From a policy view, all the mainstream Republicans are mostly interchangeable, so from a practical standpoint it really doesn’t matter much. The outlier Paul (in spite of certain ideas that are not helpful anent tradition) represents a real “people’s movement” inasmuch as the mainstream corporate world finds him anathema. My guess is that what is left of the middle class finds his economic talk, and even much of his foreign policy listenable.
