So Does Stephan Bonnar Have a Chance Againt the “GOAT” Tonight?

I think he does. I’m not predicting it. I just think he has a better shot than most people (including the odds makers) are giving him. Bonnar is huge compared to Silva, and he has a granite chin. Bonnar has never been submitted or knocked out. If he stands and has a kick boxing match with Silva he is going to get whupped, but if he uses his size advantage and makes it ugly and especially if he takes Silva down, he could win.

What say you?

I posted this partially because I wanted a record of it if Bonnar wins, but I’m not brave enough to predict an upset. Let’s just say that I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Bonnar wins. :-)

If Silva keeps fighting into old age someone is bound to beat him sooner or later, so all you have to do to be a successful prophet is predict his defeat each time he fights. That seems to be more or less what you’re doing, but covering both possible outcomes by saying it’s not a prediction but you wouldn’t be surprised.

Kirt, do you try to be an ass or does it just come naturally?

If I had been confident in a Bonnar victory I would have said so. I wasn’t. I could just see a scenario for him winning.

Bonnar was winning IMO until Silva tripped him up and then caught him with a knee.

Speaking of asses, that’s why I don’t like Silva. He clowns too much. A couple of years ago he clowned two fights in a row (Cote and Leites). I just hope some day he’ll clown and get clocked.

I did think Sonnen was going to beat him last fight. I don’t know if I discussed that fight here but if I did I wouldn’t have hedged.

do you really think that bonner was winning?
Silva let his guard down and let bonner punch him in the face a few times, and even kept his back to the grid to make the fight a little more fair.

bonnar was waaay out of his league.

Yes, Red, you did indeed discuss the Sonnen fight here and you also thought he was winning until (huge shock!) he lost. That seems to be another pattern of your commentary about Silva – he’s always losing until he wins. But, as I said above, Silva will sooner or later lose if he keeps fighting. Then you can find some other fighter to be an anti-fan of. I’ve run into the anti-fan phenomenon with respect to the entertainment world as well as the sports world – people who are constantly rooting for a specific person to lose or fail in some way. I’m not especially a fan of Silva, but I respect his talent and long record of success in MMA. In my opinion, he should retire at the top of his game. But I would not call myself a fan of any fighter other than Junior Dos Santos. I cheer for people I like in any field of endeavor, rather than cheering for disaster to strike those I may not like. That’s what just comes naturally to me.

I knew I discussed the Sonnen/Silva fight here after the fact. I didn’t recall discussing it before the fight or making a prediction. I would not have hedged if I had. I thought Sonnen would win. And Sonnen clearly was winning before he got caught. You suggested Silva dominated him which was clearly not true.

I root against people that I think have an attitude or have gotten “too big for their britches” as my mom used to say. Hence rooting against Silva and Jones. But I also root for people such as Roy Nelson, Machida, Gustafsson, etc.

“do you really think that bonner was winning?”

Bonnar was winning the clinch game against the fence using his superior size and strength which is how he should have kept the fight.

“Silva let his guard down and let bonner punch him in the face a few times, and even kept his back to the grid to make the fight a little more fair.”

I have no idea what motivates that crap. The guy is just an ass and needs to get his clock cleaned. The only stratagey I could see in that would be to bait Bonnar to get off him and open up a little space, but I think that would be giving Silva more credit than he deserves. I think he was just clowning. It’s disrespectful.

With respect to the Sonnen fight, it was Sonnen who made a fool of himself with crude boasting and Silva who was extraordinarily gracious in victory. Granted that it’s easier to be gracious in victory and I suppose a die-hard Silva hater would interpret his graciousness as being patronizing.
