This will be an enormous loss to the immigration restrictionist movement. But Tancredo said he came to Washington to push the immigration issue, which he has succeeded at doing, as more politicians are stumbling over each other to sound tougher on immigration.

    Ron Paul on Immigration:

“The talk must stop. We must secure our borders now. A nation without secure borders is no nation at all. It makes no sense to fight terrorists abroad when our own front door is left unlocked.”

    Ron Paul on Globalization:

“So called free trade deals and world governmental organizations…are a threat to our independence as a nation. They transfer power from our government to unelected foreign elites.”

    Wow!

    Also,

    http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/ron_paul_versus_the_beltway_libertarians/

Justin Raimondo in Taki’s Top Drawer writes about how the state-payed “mainstream” beltway libertarians of Cate, Reason, and the LP despise Ron Paul’s paleolibertarian credentials, his non-interventionism, and his cultural conservatism.

This is why I am proud to call myself an Old Rightist.

It is a loss because without Tancredo’s efforts, lonely efforts much of the time, there would be amnesty by now. He’s a big reason why there isn’t.

Sad to see a man’s ego get the best of him.

If Tancredo doesn’t win the 2008 Presidential election, I hope he’ll run against Ken Salazar in 2010 for US Senate.

    Politics1:

TANCREDO RETIRES; NEW IOWA POLL; NADER, McKINNEY WEIGH GREEN RUNS; NH ENDORSEMENTS.
COLORADO. Congressman Tom Tancredo (R) — a 2008 Presidential hopeful — announced Monday he will not see re-election next year. “It’s the fact that I really believe I have done all I can do in the House, especially about the issue [immigration] about which I care greatly,” Tancredo explained to the Rocky Mountain News. Tancredo also said that if his White House bid fails, he’s thinking of running against US Senator Ken Salazar (D) in 2010. No word as to whether Tancredo would also consider continuing his Prez run as a third party candidate under the Constitution Party banner — but his decision not to seek re-election gives Tancredo the third party option without negative repercussions in a messy House renomination fight. Iraq War veteran and Secretary of State Mike Coffman (R) is quickly laying the groundwork for a likely run, and is viewed as the prohibitive favorite for both the primary and general if he jumps in. Several other Republican office holders are also looking at the race. While Dems will make a run at this open seat, the GOP should be able to hold this seat by a comfortable margin.

Andrew T., I thought you had researched Ron Paul already ??

Regardless, I am glad to see you ‘wowing’ his platform, now just
    send cash.

    Remember Nov. 5

Tancredo can have the CP nomination for the asking. He would be the best candidiate they could possibly field although it would mean no U.S. candidacy in 2010.

But if an open Senate seat wasn’t Attractive enough for Tancredo why would running against an incumbent be any more attractive to Tancredo in 2010?

  10. Weaver on 30 Oct 2007 at 4:37 pm #

I now remember your making these points in the past Patroon.

He has promised those who’ve given him money that he’ll stick with it till the end, though he could return a set percentage to each.

Perhaps his plan is to build a following in the GOP primary and to then carry it over to the CP? And this would presumably build up the CP then. However, a third party run could hurt him running in 2010 on the GOP ticket, making him look less of a Republican, and a weak running could make Tancredo appear insignificant – Buchanan’s failed Reform Party run hurt Buchanan’s reputation.

He might believe that staying in the election will hold the candidates pressed against the immigration fire. Also, it will grant him a stage from which to address many Americans, especially politics nerds, an important segment of the chattering classes, who actually watch the debates.

If Tancredo believes he can win, then he ought to rethink his M.A.D. bomb Mecca strategy. That strategy alone has cost him many voters: ask most any why they don’t like Tancredo, and that’s the reason given.

Since Tancredo is a poor speaker and since Paul has a critical mass of supporters, I’d really prefer Tancredo to drop out and back Paul now. He ought to release a statement explaining in detail how a Paul presidency would be good for conservatives as he does such.

Could Tancredo still enter the Colorado Senate race? If the Colorado GOP is anything like the SC GOP, it’d fight Tancredo hard. None but neocons need apply.

If Buddy Witherspoon can win in SC and Tancredo in CO, the two Tancs could really secure our borders!

  11. Patroon on 30 Oct 2007 at 5:31 pm #

I don’t think re can re-enter the Colorado U.S. Senate race. I wouldlike to see him drop out and endorse Paul. I would like to see him explore a CP nomination. But at this point he’s probably readying his steed to charge into the windmill, sadly.

  12. ERIC on 30 Oct 2007 at 6:07 pm #

I’d like to see Tancredo flat out declare victory in Iraq and say he wants to bring the troops home, then Hunter and Paul drop out and endorse Tancredo.
    I can dream.

  13. Andrew T. on 30 Oct 2007 at 7:50 pm #

    ERIC,

You really are dreaming. If Tancredo drops out an endorses Paul, then it will give Dr. Paul’s campaign all the more momentum… if Paul and Hunter drop out an support Tancredo, the effect on his campaign will remain negligible. The Tanc has no chance whatsoever of winning.

  14. roho on 31 Oct 2007 at 12:47 am #

Watching Tancredo debate without political correctness is wonderful. It was priceless when he told Brownback that “His mother didn’t need a union as a postal worker.” Issues like L.O.S.T. and bad trade deals get more exposure when a lone wolf like Tancredo is on the stage. Otherwise, the Multinational Globalist Doners control the bulk of the debate subjects. If Paul, Tancredo, and Hunter fall out of the race, IMMIGRATION will cease to be mentioned again before the general election………All of the other candidates will comply with never mentioning it again, and the entire GOP platform will be established as “We can protect you from terrorist better than Hillary!”………………………Bad trade deals, fiscal issues, smaller government, spending, etc, etc, will be swept away to a louder war chant!

  15. Andrew T. on 31 Oct 2007 at 2:09 am #

    Roho,

You are spot on about how the other candidates’ platforms have degenerated into “we’ll save your children from Hillary and from getting attacked by theoretical terrorists!”. In fact, when they were asked in a debate what they’d cut from government when elected, Ron Paul was the only one that could give an answer!; Dr. Paul was naming entire Departments of the bureaucracy. Paraphrasing Lew Rockwell’s words, the other pseudo-cons couldn’t name a single federal typewriter they’d like to see sold off.

  16. Weaver on 31 Oct 2007 at 7:20 am #

I guess Tancredo figures he can take out Salazar, who is a pro-Amnesty Senator.

Tancredo might wish for the Republican, I suppose Bob Schaffer, who is running to win the 2008 seat.

Aside from formally deciding not to run for another term of his House seat, this 2010 announcement is also the functional equivalent of TT dropping out of the Presidential race. After all, if he were so confident in his Presidential campaign, he would know that he would be a little busy in 2010.

There’s a Senate race in Colorado in 2008, to replace to retiring Republican Wayne Allard. I take TT’s decision to wait until ‘10 as clues that he thinks: (1) Congressman Mark Udall (D-CO) has that Senate seat in the bag, because (2) HRC will become President, win Colorado in the process, and Udall will ride her coattails, (3) Salazar’s vulnerable, and (4) By the time 2010 rolls around, two years of another Clinton Presidency will create a 1994-like hot iron climate for Republicans.
