You Can’t Trust “Conservative” Democrats

More proof that you can’t trust “conservative” Democrats. Not that you can trust “conservative” Republicans not named Ron Paul either, but at best a “conservative” Democrat is a RINO Republican who has to vote in the wrong caucus. Manchin will regret this.

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, an “A” rated member of the NRA, on Monday questioned the availability of assault weapons and suggested Friday’s shooting in Newtownm Conn. has opened up the issue for debate.

Manchin said past debates about assault weapons have been shut down over a fear of destroying Second Amendment rights. But the senator said last Friday’s shooting changed all that. “The massacre of so many innocent children has changed—has changed America. We’ve never seen this happen,” Manchin said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Manchin issued criticism of assault weapons, saying, ”I don’t know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle. I don’t know anybody that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about.”

    I don’t trust Ron Paul either. He says that America is racist because of its drugs laws designed to punish blacks and he’s too close to an open borders position. I used to think he was the only honest politician in Washington but I think that he lied about the race-realist content in his newsletter.

    Bruce;

    Sam Francis and various folks at AmRen wrote that the Drug War was a proxy for monitoring…can you guess which group? Folks cannot have it both ways, even if both sides are wrong.

    Red;

    Gun lobbyists who make the multi-six figures, and their clientele, do not want to suggest that the purpose of the 2nd Amendment is a check on government–”at all times, they serve at our leisure”, or however the old memes went.

    Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America has never been shy about it. Too bad he went off the reservation and supported the invasion of Iraq.

    Well we won’t know if he’ll regret it until 2018 but if he’s going to regret it, will then Rupert Murdoch and host of GOP politicians who are thinking along similar lines.

    Perhaps they’re becoming disturbed by NRA which, more than just being a lobbying organization or promotes hunting or the responsible pursuits of firearms, is becoming so tied into the firearms industry to pay Wayne LaPierre’s million dollar salary, that’s using fear to sell more guns and ammo to enrich the industry. It’s adopting the incestual techniques of Conservative INC. which views people as cash machines for themselves and the interests they represent.

    “will then Rupert Murdoch”

    He’s not running for office. I guess a boycott is possible but unlikely. I don’t see conservatives boycotting Fox.

    “and host of GOP politicians who are thinking along similar lines”

    Quite possibly, but I was making a specific point about Manchin because he lives in gun friendly WV. Gun control is one issue that has made that state generally Republican in the last few cycles.

    Sean, I think you are letting your distatse for Conservative Inc. cloud your judgement. (On this and the Norquist Tax Pledge) I’m not a huge fan of the NRA. I prefer the no-compromise Gun Owners of America. But like it or not, the NRA is a proxy for oposition to gun control so we have to be careful about hanging them out to dry. I have little sympathy for the hysterical e-mails that fill my inbox trying to capitalize on peoples’ fears about gun control. See my post above for my take on feigned hysteria. But I don’t begrudge the NRA for being tied to the firearms industry per se. I begrudge them when they support bad policy and I support them when they support good policy and oppose bad policy.
