…today’s evangelicals are extremely shallow in their discernment. They seem to love Republican candidates who wear religion on their sleeve. Whether the candidate walks the walk does not seem to matter near as much as whether he talks the talk.
Hence, evangelicals are already warming up to John McCain, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and even to Rudy Giuliani… ~ Chuck Baldwin
Many Evangelicals are either at heart internationalist liberals, or just very confused.

Chuck Baldwin is the man.
I hope he gets the CP nomination so we will have someone to vote for in ’08 if the GOP nominates some liberal or amnesty supporter.
Hopefully Baldwin, who is a Baptist preacher, can speak the language to Evangelicals and shake them out of their stupor.
In some ways, on cultural values and fighting modernist morality, Christian conservatives are the most truly conservative element of the mainstream conservative movement. I don’t think confused is the right word. I agree with Baldwin. They are “extremely shallow in their discernment.”

“Confused” is more generous than “extremely shallow in their discernment.â€

Confused is more generous, but lacking discernment is more accurate. But I see this as a categorical difference. Not a difference of degree.
Confused would imply that they think Rudy “Amnesty” Giuliani is pro-life for example. Lacking discernment means that all someone has to do is mouth platitudes and say the name Jesus, and that means he is on the side of right.
I’m not arguing with you. Just trying to make a fine point.

I don’t think they could confuse someone like Giuliani, but they have confused, or rather have mistaken, Bush for a conservative. As Baldwin says: “Somehow, evangelicals have this deluded idea that President Bush is one of them. How they came to this delusion both fascinates and escapes me. Bush is anything but one of them.”
I meant, though, confused in terms of their priorities and strategies. I think that many Evangelicals buy the GOP line, “sure X may not be conservative, but he sure is better than this Democrat.”
