Joel Achenbach of the Washington Post has written a good article on how global warming has become a knee-jerk reaction to bad weather and how it obscures other environmental problems that make climate change more serious than it needs to be.

The reason environmentalists have stopped referring to it as global warming is because the global temperature is fluctuating across time, NOT steadily rising as Al Gore’s film claims. While the planet on average is about 1 degree warmer than a few decades ago, the planet has been significantly hotter or colder at different times in the distant past.
