It is a real shame what has happened to Christian higher education in this country. So many once Christian schools have sold their soul for the sake of respectability within secularist academia. (See my comment in the thread.)
Notre Dame is just banging the final nail in the coffin. It long ago ceased to be a Catholic institution in any teaching sense. (It may still be in some cultural and institutional sense.) Inviting legalized baby killing and stem cell harvesting Obama to give their commencement address is a blatant affront. I don’t think Notre Dame necessarily needs to ensure that their commencement speaker agrees with ever facet of Catholic doctrine, but the symbolism of this is just so obvious and bad. It is one more instance of the further co-opting of nominal Christianity by the “religious left.” This is the same reason I opposed Obama’s invitation to speak at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church. There is nothing wrong with dialogue per se, but it was another photo and press release opportunity that sent a horrible message.
And don’t think Obama doesn’t understand this. I am sure he got many commencement invites. By picking Notre Dame he is consciously sticking a thumb in the eye of an institution (the Catholic Church) that ought to be providing resistance to his transformative program.

I think it has been CINO (Catholic in Name Only) for some time now. Former Notre Dame president Father Hesburgh worked closely with the Rockefeller Foundation and with the Kennedys to try to undermine Catholic opposition to contraception and to get Pope Paul VI to issue an endorsement of contraception. While they failed at the latter they certainly succeeded at the former. Hence Notre Dame’s promotion of the culture of death considerably antedate’s Obama’s. And there are numerous other examples of Notre Dame’s anti-Catholic and pro-death activities – far more than I could mention in a short post.

While I agree with the sentiments of your post Red, I feel obligated to point out that Catholic schools regularly have warmongering death merchants that spit in the face of Just War Theory speak on their campuses. This does not discount the absurdity of having militant “abortion rights” nuts like Obama speak on campus, but it ought to tell you that the Notre Dame’s of the World long ago abandoned any notion of religious principle.

I’m not surprised. As a Protestant, I was agast at the so-called-ministers lined up to support Rudy Guiliani and the stable of “Losers” that the GOP offered in the primaries? (Other than Chuck Baldwin, which one’s endorsed Ron Paul?)……….America’s Christianity may be on “Life Support” these days?
