Hopefully it’s nothing serious but apparently Gov. Mark Sanford has been out of contact not just with state officials but with his own family for the past few days. His last whereabouts were reported somewhere near Atlanta. No one with the state’s law enforcement agencies knows where he is either. For someone thinking about running for president in 2012, this is very odd behavior.
Update: According to Politico.com, Sanford was located Monday aftenoon hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

What’s the big deal?

This is likely just a cheap shot at undermining him. Sanford is widely hated by SC politicians and “moderates”.
He likes farming and working on projects by himself as a way of relaxing. I’m not a big supporter of his, but I doubt this is anything.

If it was intended as a cheap shot, the intent was two fold. It put Mark Sanford in the news and in character, and preserves the technocrat-philosopher king vs populist dichotomy.
He’s being groomed…

Did he meet with the “Kingmakers”?……..they like privacy.

It may not amount to anything but it doesn’t take much to let someone know I’m going to be at location X for a few days and may be hard to reach by cell phone, so you can tell the press and your wife so they don’t wonder and or worry.
I just don’t think Sanford is someone you hitch your star to. I just don’t. The facts he has Republican critics in SC suggests to me he can’t win his home state (not without a major fight) in a primary and if he can’t do that, he’s not going to be president.

Due to the nature of the presidential race, any particular candidate begins as a long shot for the White House.
Recall that Clinton started as a huge long shot — in part because his track record included a losing re-election bid for Governor of Arkansas (how low can you go?)
Anyhow, London book (which is about as good a predictor has you can find short of divine revelation) has Sandford as about fifth choice for the GOP nomination, which puts him in the top ten for the White House. Nothin’ to sneeze at!

It appears that Governor Sanford was visiting his dear dear friend in Argentina.

Well, he was supposed to waited until elected and grope an intern in the Oval Office. Then, everything would have been alright . . . .
