Selling another war

Paul Craig Roberts can’t believe that we’re falling for another bunch of lies from the War Party:

Does anyone remember all the lies that they were told by then-president Bush and the “mainstream media” about the grave threat to America from weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? These lies were repeated endlessly in the print and TV media despite the reports from the weapons inspectors, who had been sent to Iraq, that no such weapons existed.

The weapons inspectors did an honest job in Iraq and told the truth, but the mainstream media did not emphasize their findings. Instead, the media served as a Ministry of Propaganda, beating the war drums for the U.S. government.

Now the whole process is repeating itself. This time the target is Iran.

This time around, however, things are different. The American public is sick of war, the military is in shambles, and truth is, we’re broke. So our handlers are bringing back their best hucksters:

Kelley Vlahos takes a long, hard look at how the Kagans do it. Essential reading for understanding how war-fever is spread.

Here is an example of the sort of shrill, deeply deranged, profoundly cowardly shrieking for war now coming from the liberal Wilsonian “right”, all based on the news that… Iran alerted the IAEA to their building a new nuclear facility and will open it to inspections.

Honestly, I cannot fathom how Jim Antle and Doug Bandow can work for that rag. Antle must be restricted from refuting this sort of utter nonsense.

SLT, can you believe both the ignorance and naked aggression of some of the AmSpec commentors? Some are as bad as what you would expect from Free Republic. How can a half-sensible magazine attract such clueless idiots?

I think “half-sensible” is overstating it. There’s Antle and Bandow – who else?

And if anyone hasn’t read that piece, please do so now. It is literal madness. It is frightening and discouraging that even after Iraq – which the mainstream “right” refuses to acknowledge was a mistake – they would still fall for this kind of manufactured hysteria and BS.

I am including RSM in the half-sensible part.

Also amazing is that Ferrara is a Harvard University and a Harvard Law School grad, but there is no sensible or thoughtful analysis in his piece at all. It is all hysteria and bellicosity. I often wonder if people like Ferrara and the Kagans actually believe this stuff or if they know it is all a big lie and they are just trying to rile up the masses. Larison does think they know it is all BS.

Oh – I see what you mean. Yes, RSM is half sensible, but Antle is entirely sensible. Most of the rest are senseless, obnoxious and destructive.

“I often wonder if people like Ferrara and the Kagans actually believe this stuff or if they know it is all a big lie and they are just trying to rile up the masses.”

Me too. It’s extremely hard to believe any sensible, well informed person could look at the facts and come to Ferrara’s conclusion (war!!!!). Our threshold for what constitutes a legitimate cassus belli is ridiculous. It is no longer a last-resort measure – it’s a routine foreign policy option that is chosen blithely and often. It’s as likely to be the first resort for many of these people than the last.

Americans need a war to devastate our own country to remind us all how truly terrible it is.

At the end of the Day there WILL be War.BHO is just playing his assigned roll of temprary peacenik until its time for the Super 911……maybe that unaccounted sixth for cruide missile warhead from a couple years backing going off in Chicago or Denver. Meanwhile the beat beat beat of the War Drum will get those Red State sheeple firmly back under control of the neocon faction of the Unity Party. Gotta get em revved up for a full out crystal night bashing of any new disruptions by a new group of Truthers regarding the Events of the next Day which will REALLY change everything.
