George Will’s interview with Ron Paul

You can find the interview at www.msnbc.com/msn in the latest edition of Newsweek.

Here’s an early excerpt

Feb. 26, 2007 issue – Some rice farmers from Congressman Ron Paul’s district were in his office the other day, asking for this and that from the federal government. The affable Republican from south Texas listened nicely, then forwarded their requests to the appropriate House committee. It may or may not satisfy their requests in some bill dispensing largesse to agricultural interests. Then Paul will vote against the bill.

Will says good things about Dr. Paul but in a condenscening, pat-on-the-head sort of way. He’s almost saying “Wonderful! Here’s a man who really believes in everything we’ve been saying for the past 40 years and he’s running for president. Now back to the real world.”

If Paul’s a “cheerful anachronism” what does that make the Ronald Reagan of 1980 whom Will prepped for his debate against Jimmy Carter? Is he saying we were all hopelessly naive? Do tell George.

This article illustrates exactly the point I was trying to make in my Ralph Nader article. Centrism has been elevated to the status of a virtue. A grudging sort of respect is given to ideologues, and then they are dismissed. “Now go play little Ron while us adults pick a nominee.”

We must change this dynamic, but how?

The center has to be discredited, just as it was after Watergate. That’s how Reagan ultimately won in 1980 after two failed attempts at president. Hopefully the war will do this.
