Taking a vacation from reality

Posted under Election 2012 & Humor

Summertime is here and it’s usually the time when persons take vacations. Of course, one would think if a man is running seriously for President he would be hard at work on the campaign trail, not taking a vacation from the campaign.

Yet that’s what Newt Gingrich is doing right now, taking a vacation. He’s reported to be off the Greek Isles near Turkey with his mistress , oh excuse me, his wife on luxury yacht. Perhaps he might indulge himself by entertaining (or is that enraging?) the Greeks on his ideas to solving their dept crises or maybe he’ll visit Taki if he doesn’t order the boat to be sunk by the Greek navy to prevent such a juncture on his island. I can understand if Taki has better things to do with his time.

Why would a Presidential candidate suddenly leave the trail and the country for that matter to go on vacation? Perhaps there’s method to the Madness of Speaker Newt. Every time he opens his mouth he drops 10 points in the polls. Perhaps by shutting up and staying out of sight he can continue be competitive. It certainly can’t hurt. And perhaps being on a vacation will keep his mind off of stories about his staffers in Iowa bolting the campaign. That’s what vacations are for, little, short term escapes from reality.

But maybe this isn’t a vacation at all. Maybe it’s a new form of campaigning. After all, what fun is it addressing every senior citizen center in Iowa, when you can stay on your luxury yacht in Aegean and campaign via Twitter or Facebook? Perhaps we may be witnessing the dawn of new style campaigning for technologically savvy Gingrich, by boat out in the middle of nowhere. After all, if his ideas are so important people must hear them, does it matter if he’s right in front of them or out in cyberspace in our globalized, interconnected world? I hope he gives it a try because if he does, it will pure Newt.

I for one am quite sorry Newt has chosen now to take a vacation abroad (or “flee the scene,” depending on one’s perspective).

Why am I sorry? — because this analysis may be correct; he may well at least arrest his poll numbers’ plummet, while I would be happy to see them plunge to single-figure levels . . .

    . . . and *stay* there.

I will say I find him more attractive — well, no, that’s a lie; “less unattractive” better captures it — than, say, Palin and Bachmann, if not several of the other possible congtenders on the GOP side. But that’s sort of like my saying I’d rather be locked up for 10 years instead of twenty.

Please come back, Newt, and make the rounds, shooting off your mouth, far, wide, and at *every* opportunity.

Meanwhile, since you *are,* after all, in sun-drenched Greece, AND since you do — after all — have your wife with you — watch out for those bikini-clad Greek ladies, lovely as they are. . . .
